What is SPC Flooring? Transform Your Space With The Look of Hardwood at Half the Cost!

Are you looking to give your home a fresh, modern touch that combines style, durability, and easy maintenance? SPC flooring might be the perfect solution!

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite, or sometimes called Solid Polymer Core, this is  a type of flooring that has quickly gained popularity due to its robust qualities. Here’s why SPC flooring may make a fantastic choice for your home.

What is SPC Flooring Made Of? Composition and Construction

SPC flooring is a marvel in the flooring world, thanks to its unique multi-layered structure. It’s built like a sandwich, with each layer serving a specific purpose. So what is SPC flooring made of?

  • The Wear Layer: This is the transparent top layer that stands up to your daily wear and tear. It’s the shield that protects against scuffs, stains, and scratches. This is measured in mils. The more mils, the more traffic it will withstand. While 6 mils is good for standard low residential traffic. 8- 12 mils is great for any residential home with traffic. In light commercial traffic we would recommend 12 to 20 mils based on traffic.
  • The Vinyl Layer: Think of this as the design canvas. Here, you get the look of hardwood or stone, without the cost or upkeep.
  • The SPC Core: This is where the magic happens. A high-density core layer made of limestone and stabilizers makes your flooring snug, stable, and virtually indestructible.
  • The Acoustic Underlay: To tie it all together, this bottom layer offers cushioning and sound absorption, making each step pleasantly quiet.

Embedded in this construction are standout features that might just make you a fan of SPC flooring:

  • Impressive Durability: It’s kid-proof, pet-proof, and life-proof. The rigid core technology resists impacts and heavy traffic with ease.
  • Water-Resistance: Spills and splashes? No problem! SPC doesn’t warp or swell, making it perfect for any room, including bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Comfort Underfoot: It might be tough, but it’s not rough. SPC flooring provides a comfortable underfoot feel throughout the day.
  • Temperature Stability: Where some floors might expand or contract with temperature changes, SPC stays stable, keeping your floors looking great in all seasons.
  • Eco-Friendly: Not only is SPC flooring built to last, but it also has eco-friendly aspects. It’s often made of recyclable materials and contributes to healthier indoor air quality.

Versatile Design Options with SPC Flooring

With SPC flooring, the variety of styles and patterns you can choose from is vast. Here’s what to expect:

  • Array of Colors: Whether you fancy a light, breezy hue or a dark, dramatic tone, there’s something to match your taste.
  • Assortment of Textures: Mimic the feel of natural wood grains or the smoothness of stone with textured finishes.
  • Sizes and Shapes: Wide planks or tiles that come smaller and narrower, even long planks to give a larger open feel in your home, SPC flooring comes in all shapes and sizes to complement your interior design.
  • Ease of Matching: Whatever your decor style, from minimalist to rustic, old world charm to modern, SPC flooring can enhance your space’s ambiance.

Installation and Maintenance:
A Homeowner’s Guide

Embracing a new flooring option, like the durable SPC, can uplift your space beautifully. Here’s a straightforward guide through the install process and how to keep it looking great for years to come.

Getting Started with Installation

First, you’ll want to ensure you’re working with experts in this field, like the team at Tom Adams Windows & Carpets, as they bring years of experience along with a genuine understanding of local homes.

  • Prepare the Subfloor: This is crucial. Your subfloor must be clean, dry, and level. A good base will prevent future issues with your flooring. SPC flooring can be installed below, on, or above grade on slab or hardwood subfloors.
  • Measure Twice: Precision matters. Accurate measurements will help in ordering the right amount of flooring.
  • Acclimation: SPC flooring needs to adapt to the temperature and humidity of the room. Leave the unopened boxes in the room where they will be installed for at least 48 hours.
  • Click and Lock: Most SPC planks are designed to click together. Some are designed to be glued down. Their design simplifies installation, making it a straightforward process for skilled installers. Floor prep is required to ensure the floor is flat to meet 1 ⁄ 4 ” variance over a 10 ft span, and is important to have a successful click and lock installation.
  • Cutting to Size: With professional tools, the planks can be trimmed to fit comfortably around corners and avoid obstacles. Always leaving an expansion gap for variance of room temperature and movement of the floor.

Keeping Your Flooring in Top Shape

Maintaining your SPC flooring is remarkably easy, ensuring it retains its beauty and resilience.

  • Regular Cleaning: Use a broom, dust mop, or vacuum to get rid of everyday dust and debris.
  • Mopping: Occasionally, you can mop your floors with a damp mop. Use a mild cleaner approved for SPC flooring. Avoid harsh chemicals or crystals.
  • Spills: Wipe them up immediately to prevent any potential staining.
  • Protect from Heavy Weight: Even though SPC is tough, avoid dragging heavy furniture. Use protective pads under furniture legs.

Benefits of SPC Flooring to Other Types of Flooring

When considering new flooring for your home, it’s essential to weigh all your options. SPC stands out from other materials by offering unique benefits:

  • Ease of Installation: SPC flooring’s click-and-lock mechanism simplifies the installation process compared to traditional hardwood or tile.
  • Long-Term Costs: Due to its robustness, SPC flooring can be more cost-effective over the long run, with little need for repairs or replacements.
  • Aesthetic Diversity: SPC flooring provides a wide array of design choices, unparalleled by many other flooring types, allowing for greater customization.
  • Cost-Effective: SPC flooring provides the look of more expensive materials like hardwood or stone but at a fraction of the cost. It’s also typically less expensive than traditional tile or hardwood installations.
  • Longevity: Investing in SPC flooring means you’re less likely to need a replacement anytime soon. Its durable nature translates to cost savings over time.
